UG Academic Council
FoundedFebruary 22nd 2017
Founder(s)Paawan Mukker

The UG Academic Council is an informal academic body, which accounts for the smooth communication between the Academic Affairs Secretary and other students. Though not a formal body, together with the Academic Affairs Secretary they are on a path of making Academics at IIT Mandi more and more glorious. Currently the Council is an informal one, and the Academic Affairs Secretary is working towards formalizing this concept.

The UG Academic Council was founded in IIT Mandi by Paawan Mukker, the Academic Affairs Secretary, 2016 - 2017, with the primary purpose of helping in shaping better decisions regarding academic affairs at IIT Mandi, particularly those involving specific matters of various programmes.

Vision statement

“To increase the participation of the student community in the framing of those decisions which impact their day-to-day academic life.” - Anand Ramrakhyani, Academic Affairs Secretary, 2019 - 2020.

Selection Procedure

For every new tenure, nominations will be invited for representatives of each programme:

  • The list of interested students will be circulated amongst all the students.
  • If there are multiple nominations from the students of a particular Department, the concerned students can discuss amongst themselves and all but one of them can drop their nominations if they reach any conclusion.
  • If the issue of multiple nominations doesn’t get resolved still, then the AD (Courses) and the Academic Affairs Secretary shall take a decision (based upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, (a) willingness to work, (b) communication skills, (c) academic record, etc.).
  • If no nominations are received from a particular programme, the Academic Affairs Secretary shall on consultation with the AD (Courses) nominate a student as the representative of the concerned programme.

Organizational Structure

  • Academic Affairs Secretary (Convener)
  • Representatives (1 per programme)

Council Meetings

The Academic Affairs Secretary convenes the Council meetings on an at-most-fortnightly basis for disseminating information on the recent academic decisions, current status of the tasks at hand and to receive feedback and suggestions from the Council members on the drafted and to-be-drafted academic proposals.

Minutes of the meetings are prepared and circulated (on the institute forum) by the Academic Affairs Secretary usually within one week post each session.

Differences between a Council Member and a CR

The roles and functions of a CR (Class Representative) and a member of the Academic Council differ completely. The following are the differences between them -

  • Class Representative(s)
    • Are member(s) of the Class Committee.
    • Attend(s) CCMs (one before Quiz 1 and the other before Quiz 2) on behalf of all the students registered in a certain course, and give interim feedback on how the course is going.
  • Academic Council member
    • Is a member of the UG Academic Council.
    • Raises concerns affecting the students from their programme, and whose opinions / suggestions shall be forwarded to the concerned academic authority.

The CRs are responsible for smooth conductance of the course and shall reflect the opinions of the class (for a particular course) in the 2 Class Committee Meetings (CCMs – one before Quiz 1 and the other before Quiz 2), while the Academic Council members shall raise concerns affecting the students from their branch and year, and whose opinions / suggestions shall be forwarded to the Board of Academics (BoA) and the Senate.

Events and Activities

Vyarth Shastra

Vyarth Shastra is an event inspired by the BAHFest, where BAH stands for Bad Ad-hoc Hypotheses. The idea of BAHFest belongs to the author of SMBC (a popular American webcomic), Mr. Zach Weinersmith. The event is held in competition mode, where around 7-8 speakers present their theories and the winners receive cash prizes as reward.

Branch Introduction Session

The branch-wise guidance session for all the first year students is conducted in the beginning of their first semester. For each branch, a few senior students of our institute discuss in brief the following things:

  • the nature and content of courses being taught in a branch,
  • kind of internships and placements one can get after completing education in a branch,
  • scope of pursuing higher studies after completing education in a branch.

The purpose of this session is to:

  • familiarize the students with what kind of stuff awaits them ahead in their branch,
  • make students aware about the nitty-gritty of all the other 6 branches, so that one can make an informed decision while opting for a branch change,
  • let the first year students know some amongst the many prominent senior students in each branch (or area of expertise), whom they can approach whenever they face any branch related issues.

Academic Awareness Session

The purpose of this session is to increase awareness about the:

  • Useful resources to search for answers to their academic queries.
  • Various academic bodies and academic authorities at IIT Mandi whom they can approach to raise their concerns.
  • Important academic rules and regulations at IIT Mandi.

Curriculum Explanation Session

The purpose of the session is to explain the:

  • Credit wise and basket wise (Institute Core, Discipline Core, Discipline Electives, Free Electives, HSS baskets and HSS Electives, ISTP, MTP, etc.) requirements for the completion of undergraduate degree.
