Space Technology and Astronomy Cell

Introduction

The Space Technology and Astronomy Club (STAC) at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) is a dynamic student organization established in 2012 , dedicated to exploring the realms of space, astronomy, and cutting-edge technology. Founded with the vision of fostering a passion for space exploration and technological innovation, STAC serves as a platform for students to delve into the fascinating world beyond our atmosphere.

Mission and Objectives

STAC, since its inception, has been driven by a set of clear objectives:

1. Enhancing Knowledge: STAC endeavors to expand students' understanding of Astronomy and Astrophysics by hosting informative sessions, workshops, and lectures featuring experts in the field. These activities encourage members to delve deep into the mysteries of space.

2. Technological Skill Development: Acknowledging the crucial role of technology in space exploration, STAC focuses on empowering its members with practical skills. Through hands-on projects, coding challenges, and collaborative endeavors, the club strives to ensure that its members are well-equipped for the challenges of the future.

3. Networking and Collaboration: STAC fosters a sense of community by facilitating networking opportunities with professionals, researchers, and enthusiasts in the field. Collaborative initiatives with other clubs and organizations enrich the overall learning experience.

Activities and Events

STAC organizes a diverse range of events throughout the academic year, including

1. Stellar Talks:

Inviting distinguished speakers and experts to share insights and experiences in the fields of Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Space Technology.

2. Workshops and Hackathons

Conducting hands-on workshops and hackathons to develop practical skills in programming, data analysis, and other relevant technological domains.

3. Observation Nights

Hosting telescope observation nights, providing members with the opportunity to observe celestial bodies and gain practical experience in observational astronomy.

4. Annual Fests - Zenith and Astrax

1. Zenith: An intra-college Astrofest organized by STAC, Zenith is an annual celebration of all things astronomical within the institute. The fest includes engaging competitions, exhibitions, and keynote events.

2. AstraX: An inter-college Astro-Fest, AstraX serves as a focal point for students and professors inclined towards computational and theoretical astronomy. The event features keynotes, discussions, and various activities that captivate the interest of the astronomy community

Projects by STAC

Projects 2023-24

1. Exoplanet Detection using Machine Learning

Researchers used machine learning to classify starlight dips as planet or star-related, aiming to detect exoplanets with TESS data.

2. Solar X-Ray Burst Detection Web App

A web app identifies and categorizes X-ray bursts with parameters like rise time and peak flux. They aim for minimal false detections.

3. Moon Mapping from Chandrayaan 2 Data

Scaling lunar images to high resolution from Chandrayaan 2's OHRC and TMC modules.

4. Asteroid Classification with AI/ML

Developed AI/ML models to classify hazardous near-Earth asteroids and seek teams for identifying mineable asteroids.

Achievements

STAC takes pride in its members' accomplishments, which include:

1. NASA Space Apps Achievement:

IIT Mandi's team secured a position in the Global top 100 teams at NASA Space Apps, being the only team from India. They received a Global finalist honorable mention and were Global runner-up in the geoAI reimagined topic.

2. Inter IIT Tech Achievement:

• Stellar members secured a bronze medal for the quantum computing problem statement at Inter IIT Tech. The team, demonstrated remarkable collaboration and teamwork.

3. ISRO Students Innovation Festival Space Hackathon:

Out of the 10 teams representing IIT Mandi, four teams qualified for the finals in the ISRO Students Innovation Festival Space Hackathon, showcasing their creative solutions to diverse space-related challenges.

4. Cosmic Eye Astrophotography Contest:

Vivek Sahu (S21025) secured the 2nd position in DSLR Photography (College Category) in 'Cosmic Eye 2023 - The Astrophotography Contest,' hosted by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) during World Space Week. Last year, he also secured the 3rd position in Mobile Astrophotography.

Our Resolution

The IIT Mandi Space Technology and Astronomy Club (STAC) continue to inspire and empower students to reach for the stars. Through a blend of academic enrichment, hands-on experiences, and a vibrant community, STAC remains at the forefront of cultivating the next generation of space enthusiasts and innovators. Join STAC, where the sky is not the limit—it's just the beginning.
